Cosmetic packaging machine is a broad term. A cream in a jar, a serum in a dropper bottle, a shampoo in a pump bottle, a sample sachet, a bath salt in a tub and a soap bar in a wrapper are all cosmetics, and each one is packed on a different machine. This guide maps cosmetic and personal care products to the filling, sachet, capping, labelling and wrapping machines that pack them, so you can work out what your line actually needs before you ask for a quote.

What a cosmetic packaging line does

A finished cosmetic goes through the same stages as any packaged product: the product is dosed into its container or pack, the container is closed, it is labelled or decorated, and it is coded with a batch number and date. For bottles and jars that means a filler, a capper and a labeller. For sachets and stick packs, the forming, filling and sealing happen in one machine. For soap bars and wipes, the pack is a flow wrap. The product decides the filler, the container decides the capper and labeller, and the volume decides whether each machine is semi-automatic or fully automatic.

Sachet machines for cosmetic creams, shampoo and samples

Single-use sachets are the standard format for cosmetic samples, hotel amenities, hair treatments and travel packs. A sachet packing machine forms the sachet from a roll of printed film, doses the product, seals and cuts it in one cycle. Cosmetic cream sachet packaging machines are fitted with a piston dosing head, which pushes a set volume of thick product through the nozzle without drag or drip. A shampoo sachet filling machine, or shampoo sachet packing machine, is the same unit with a pump or piston filler dosing by volume, and it covers conditioner and liquid soap as well. Sachet styles are three-side seal, four-side seal and pillow pack. A single-lane machine runs up to 40 sachets per minute depending on product and dose, and a multi-lane machine forms several sachets side by side for higher output. For a slim single-serve tube, the same technology runs as a stick pack machine, which suits serums, gels and liquid supplements. For larger resealable formats such as a stand-up pouch of bath salts or a refill pouch of hand wash, a pouch filling machine fills ready-made printed pouches.

Filling bottles and jars

The filler is chosen by how the product flows. A cosmetic filling machine is a liquid filling machine specified around viscosity first and container second, so a cream filling machine and a toner filling machine are the same frame with different pumps.

Jars are filled from the top with a piston nozzle sized to the opening, and containers from a few millilitres to several litres run on the same machine with a nozzle height adjustment. For a smaller brand, a semi-automatic filling machine with a peristaltic, gear or piston pump fills one container at a time at operator pace. Capping pump bottles, trigger sprayers and jars

Cosmetic closures are the awkward part of the line. Pump caps and trigger sprayers carry a dip tube that has to be guided into the bottle neck before the collar is tightened, and cosmetic screw caps are often small and decorative, so torque has to be consistent without marking the cap. Labelling and sleeving

Presentation matters more in cosmetics than in most categories, so label placement has to be exact. A labelling machine applies front and back labels in register on oval and flat bottles, a single wrap-around label on round bottles and jars, and top labels on tins and compacts. Soap bars, wipes and sheet masks

Solid and flat cosmetic products are wrapped, not filled. A flow wrapper wraps soap bars, bath bombs, cosmetic wipes and sheet masks in a sealed pillow pack from a reel of printed film. The entry-level flow wrapper is the usual first machine for a soap maker moving off hand wrapping, and the servo model runs up to 60 packs per minute with recipe changeover between products.

Cosmetic powders and bath salts

Loose powders, mineral foundation, dry shampoo, bath salts and bath soaks are dosed by auger. A powder filling machine meters the dose by the number of screw rotations, to an accuracy of around 1 percent, into jars, tubs, sachets or pouches, with dust control at the fill point. Bath salts and granular soaks can also run on a volumetric cup filler.

Starting small: a benchtop cosmetic line
