Filling Machines for Chemicals and Cleaning Products: Bleach, Detergents and Corrosive Liquids
A chemical filling machine is specified differently from a food or cosmetic filler, and the difference is not speed. Bleach eats stainless steel. Detergents foam. Thick gels will not pour. Solvents attack seals. A filler that runs juice all day can be ruined by a week of hypochlorite. Why chemicals need a different filling machine
- Corrosion: sodium hypochlorite bleach, acids and some sanitisers attack stainless steel and standard seals. Contact parts have to be chosen for the product.
- Foaming: detergents, dishwashing liquid and surfactant-based cleaners foam when filled quickly, which means overfills, short fills and product on the outside of the bottle.
- Viscosity: the range runs from water-thin disinfectants to thick bleach gels and fabric softeners, and one dosing method does not cover all of it.
- Container range: the same product often ships in a 500 mL trigger bottle, a 1 L or 2 L bottle and a 5 L jerry can, so the filler has to move between them with a recipe change.
- Accuracy: declared-volume packs have to meet trade measurement rules, and overfilling a cheap product in volume adds up.
Wetted parts: the specification that matters most
The wetted parts are everything the product touches: the tank, pump, valves, seals, hoses and nozzles. On a food filler they are stainless steel. On a chemical liquid filling machine they are selected against the product, and confirmed against your safety data sheet before the machine is built. Capping trigger sprayers, pump caps and jerry cans
Cleaning products are where trigger sprayers live. The sprayer has a dip tube that must be guided into the bottle neck before the collar is tightened, which a standard screw capper cannot do. Chemical labels carry hazard pictograms, safety directions and batch information, and they have to stay legible after contact with the product. Where the batch number and date are printed onto the label at the time of application, a print and apply system or a thermal transfer printer does the printing, and the ribbon has to be full resin so the code survives chemical contact and abrasion. Frequently asked questions
Can a stainless steel filling machine fill bleach?
Not for long. Sodium hypochlorite corrodes stainless steel and standard seals. A bleach filler uses UPVC or similar corrosion-resistant contact parts throughout, including the buffer tank.
Can one filler run bleach and a detergent?
If the contact parts are specified for the more aggressive product, yes, with a flush between products and a recipe change for the dose. The materials have to be checked against both safety data sheets before the machine is built.
