Box and Carton Labelling Machines: How to Label Cases, and When You Need Print and Apply
Labelling a shipping carton is a different job from labelling a retail bottle. The surface is flat and porous, the label usually carries a barcode that has to scan at the depot, and on most packing lines the information on it changes from case to case. What a box labelling machine is
A box labelling machine, also called a carton labeller, case labeller, box label applicator or label applicator machine for boxes, is a pressure-sensitive label applicator set up for flat-sided packs rather than bottles. A sensor detects the carton on the conveyor, the machine peels a self-adhesive label from its backing web, and a tamp pad, wipe-on roller or blow-on head puts it on the top, side or corner of the case. The core equipment is the same labelling machine used for bottles and jars. What changes is the applicator head, the width of the label web and how the carton is guided past the head. Label applicators for boxes are specified around those three things.
A sticker label applicator is the same machine described from the label's point of view: it dispenses a die-cut sticker and presses it onto the product. Ask a supplier for one and you will be quoted a label applicator.
Where the label goes on the case
- Top labelling: the most common setup. A top applicator head places a product, content or shipping label on the upper face as the case travels flat. Simple to guide, easy to change label size.
- Side labelling: for cases that are stacked or palletised so the top face is hidden. The case runs against a guide rail and a side head applies the label to the leading, trailing or outer face.
- Corner wrap: one label applied across two adjacent faces so it reads from either side. Used for tamper evidence on cartons and for product labels on square tubs and boxes that may be stacked either way.

Pre-printed labels or print and apply
This is the decision that sets the budget. A standard box labeller dispenses pre-printed labels from a roll. Every label is identical, so it is cheaper, simpler and has one consumable. If every carton in the run carries the same artwork and the same text, this is the machine to buy.
If the label has to carry a batch number, a use-by date, a net weight, a serial number or a shipping barcode that differs from carton to carton, no pre-printed roll can do it. That is the job of a print and apply labelling system, sold for this purpose as a print and apply case labeller. A thermal transfer print engine inside the applicator prints each label the moment before it is applied, with the data pulled from your line controller, ERP or warehouse system. One exception worth knowing. If the only variable is a date or batch code, and the rest of the label is fixed, an inkjet coder can print that code directly onto the carton or onto a pre-printed label as it passes. A continuous inkjet printer beside a standard applicator is often cheaper than moving the whole label to print and apply. Once a barcode has to change per carton, that shortcut stops working.
Matching the applicator to the carton
- Case size range: a line that runs one case size can use fixed guides. A line that runs mixed sizes needs adjustable guides and a label position stored per recipe, so changeover is a screen selection rather than a spanner job.
- Surface: corrugated board takes a label well but is rarely perfectly flat. A tamp pad presses the label on with contact, which suits recessed or uneven faces. A wipe-on roller suits a flat face moving at steady speed. A blow-on head fires the label across a small gap without touching the pack, which suits fragile or shrink-wrapped cases.
- Speed: count cases per minute at the labelling point, not bottles per minute at the filler. Hand-packed lines often run under ten cases a minute; an automatic case packer runs faster and needs a faster head.
- Label size: shipping labels are larger than bottle labels, so the applicator needs a wider web path and a bigger tamp pad. Confirm the label dimensions before the machine is specified.
- Environment: chilled and frozen goods need an adhesive that grips a cold, damp surface. On print and apply, that also means a wax-resin or resin ribbon rather than plain wax, or the print rubs off before the carton reaches the depot.
What goes on a carton label in Australia
Trade units moving through Australian retail and third-party logistics are generally expected to carry a GS1 barcode, usually an ITF-14 or GS1-128, along with the product description, count per case, batch or lot number and best-before date where the product is perishable. Pallets carry an SSCC logistics label. Because batch and date change per run and weight can change per carton, most retail supply chains push carton labelling toward print and apply.
Meat cartons are the clearest case. A meat carton labeller has to print the carton weight, which is different on every box, alongside regulated content, so it is nearly always a print and apply head fed by a checkweigher upstream.
Pallet labelling after the case
Once cases are stacked, a pallet label applicator applies the SSCC dispatch label to one, two or three faces of the finished pallet before it leaves the wrapper. This is always print and apply, because every pallet has a unique SSCC. If cartons are palletised by a cobot palletiser, the pallet labeller sits between the palletiser and the stretch wrapper.
A semi-automatic option for low volumes
An operation that hand-packs a few hundred cases a day does not need an inline system.
